El Morro
National Monument Spaniards and pioneers were drawn to the spectacular scenery here. They rested by the large beautiful pool at the foot of the cliffs. Many spent hours chiseling ornate messages and names into the cliffs. Large variety of trees and plants in the area. Indian ruins on top of the cliff. |

Chaco Culture National Historical
Park Thirteen major Indian ruins and hundreds of smaller ones. Unsurpassed in the United States. Built during the highest point of Pueblo pre-Columbian civilization. |

El Malpais National
Monument Lava flows with pockets in them collect rain water. The result--a large variety of plants and trees in the pockets. Also, breathtaking cliffs and rock formations, such as La Ventana, the stone arch shown here. |

Zuni-Acoma
trail Part of the centuries-old network of Indian trails connecting the Zuni and Acoma pueblos. It cuts across El Malpais. |

Lava
tubes Located on the eastern side of El Malpais, these caves were formed when lava flowed out of the tubes it had formed. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter. |

Mining Museum A simulated uranium mine, where you actually go underground. Extensive museum exhibit. The equipment in the photo is a drill bit! |

Mt. Taylor Just north of Grants, this 11,301 ft. mountain is the site of the Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathalon, an international sporting event. Magnificent pine, fir, and aspen forests abound at different locations on the mountain. Wild irises and lupine cover the southern slope in June and July. |
